I always tell my art students to draw what they see. Draw what you know! I can actually remember where I was when I drew this sketch. My son was about five and it was a hot summer day. While I sat outside my studio door watching him zoom around in one of those pedal cars , I sketched out this scene.
I believe I also drew a chipmunk playing wiffle ball and a cat splashing around in a wading pool. The heat must have been getting to me. I’ve included this particular drawing because I liked the technique of my loose pencil lines. I’m sure I “TRIED” to duplicate the same feel when I took it to finished color but if I inked it, I’m sure it lost some of the spontaneity. Inking can be a bit rigid for me when I go too finished. Often that’s not an issue and is appropriate but sometimes I want my art to be softer. If I finished in colored pencil or water color only, I may have pulled that look off. I just couldn’t find the final art I did so I could compare.
