The BMX Artist

Filed under: Uncategorized — scottnelson @ 7:03 pm

The intention of  my blog has never been to look back and say “remember when I drew that!!!”   But sometimes you can’t move forward artistically until you recognize  and appreciate where you’ve been and what it’s taken to get where you are.

I’ve always loved to bicycle.  Think I was the first kid in my neighborhood to ride a wheelie the length of a telephone pole (that’s how we measured a  good wheelie distances back then).   So once people said “Wow Scott– that wheelie was cool” , I never got off the bike. I think my longest wheelie was the distance of 7 telephone poles or about a half mile!  I spent all my paper route money on bike parts. I raced BMX. I trail road. I jumped over trash cans like the Fonz. I practically lived on that BMX bike with Skyway rims and a Mongoose gooseneck!  That is I never got off my bike unless I was drawing.  Drawing and riding.  Riding and drawing.  That’s all I did.  And when you’re 11 or 12 years old and you were looking for something to draw, you looked for inspiration in what you liked to do.  So what else would I draw? I drew bikes.   Lucky for me artist (pro racer/stunt rider) Bob Haro was around in the late 70’s and early 80’s too.  His bike cartoons and illustrations were the main reason I’d buy Bicycle Motocross Magazine and BMX Action.  I’d copy his drawings for hours.  Studying how he shadowed his knobbies or drew a highlight on the rider’s goggles.  His inking ability, design and overall style was/is awesome.  Even today when I  look back at his art, his drawings STILL blow me away and I only wish I was half as talented.  Just amazing stuff.  So every few months I like to talk about an artist who inspired me and I’d be remiss if I didn’t place the talents of Bob Haro very high on my list of reasons why I’m an artist today.   Thank You  Bob!
